Neuro Lingustic Programming ( NLP)
I’ve known about the benefits of embracing NLP for a while now but I didn’t really appreciate it until I was thrown into a situation where people were actually practicing it.
NLP is defined as:-
“A model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them” and “a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour.”
In basics, it looks at the relationship between communication and behaviour and aiming to positively improve and change it.
NLP: The Low down.
Many have discredited NLP because of course, it’s not proven to have any scientific link between the points endorsed by NLP and the actual outcome. But lets get real here people, it doesn’t need to be scientifically proven to show it actually works.
Im not going to bore you with ‘case studies’, if you really want to know how it works check every successful business man/womans ‘steps to success’.
If you speak to people differently you’re going to produce a different result. Obviously it’s not as simple as that but language completely changes interaction between people. I don’t mean language in the basic sense, I mean specifically the way we use words to control certain situations.
Tony Robbins endorses Transformational Vocabulary. Originally in his book Awaken the Giant Within but now after years of practicing, it is part of his normal everyday life. He is one of the most successful people on the planet.
He talks about how changing our vocabulary can change our mood and our behaviours. If you’re upset and your constantly telling people how ‘depressed’ you are, its going to have a negative, depressing effect on you.
If you change that word, telling people that when you feel sad you actually feel ‘ a bit eh’ its going to have less of a negative affect.
Have you ever thought of someone as a hot head? Someone who is always swearing (cursing) and someone who is always telling people how angry and pissed off they are and how much they hate everyone. Imagine if that person were to change the words that were coming out of their mouth? That would affect their demeanour at that point and hence, the way other people perceive it too.
NLP and Business.
It was in a business meeting where I realised people actually adopt NLP in working life. I knew of Transformational Vocab from the Tony Robbins books and seminars and so knowing that NLP was used in day-to-day life really interested me.
NLP is used as a training technique for businesses. It is used to produce lasting change in the way we use our minds, with everything focuses on a better us, self-improvement.
Modelling is a huge NLP concept. Model or copy what the successful people will do and you will become like them, successful.
There are so many benefits to using NLP, all of which I couldn’t mention in such a small blog post.
If you are looking for a way as a business person to boost morale, change the way your employees think and encourage and motivate then NLP can definitely help.
Although labelled as a pseudoscience, its so much more than that. Anything that shows that by making small changes we can impact our lives in a positive way deserves to be noticed.
